ADVENTURERS:
Women refusing to stay at home
Andrew de la Rue/The Age
KAY COTTEE (b1954)
The first woman to circumnavigate the world single-handed, this Australian yachtswoman sailed into Sydney Harbour aboard her yacht Blackmore’s First Lady on 5 June 1988 after the 46,000 kilometre voyage which took a little over 5 months.

CATHERINE GREGSON (b1914)
Picture left, the first woman to drive by car around Australia, is seen standing beside her utility at the end of the epic 6 month journey in 1937. Leaving Sydney for Adelaide with her mother Grace who accompanied her throughout, the 23 year old from Tamworth NSW did all her own maintenance. Sibyl Sale from Tasmania joined the two women in Alice Springs from whence they drove to Darwin, Perth, across the Nullabor to Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney.

MARIE SINGLE (née Burke) (b1926)
In 1947 at the age of 21, Marie was the first woman to hitch-hike around Australia attracting national public and media attention including coverage by Movietone News. In spite of some criticism and a jail threat for hitchhiking which was considered “unwomanly behaviour“, she completed her 2-year journey, married and had 12 children.
