The current status of this new world-class facility scheduled to open 2006 at the southern tip of Battery Park City in Lower Manhattan, is uncertain after the tragic events of September 11 2001. It is dedicated to exploring the role of American women in history, providing educational outreach and developing leadership training for women and girls. The project – a permanent tribute to women’s history - grew out of one of the recommendations of the Commission Honouring the Achievements of Women in celebration of the 150th anniversary in 1998 of the first women’s rights convention, Seneca Falls, NY.

Purchased and restored by the organisation, this Seneca Falls Savings Bank of 1916 has been the Hall of Fame’s home since 1979.

This is the first national organisation in the USA that exists solely to honor and celebrate the achievements of extraordinary American women. It is located in Seneca Falls, about 550 km from New York City, in the heart of the popular Finger Lakes Region. This historic village is the site of the first Women’s Rights Convention in 1848 at the Wesleyan Chapel whose ruins today are the Women’s Rights National Historical Park.

The Hall of Fame was established in 1969at a formal tea at the local college. Its President had been shocked to discover that few women were included at the Bronx’s Museum of Distinguished Americans and resolved to change the situation.

1973 saw the induction of the first 20 women. Now around 200 framed mini-biographies with B/W photographs line the walls, along with a year 2000 exhibit “Come Stand Among Great Women”. In addition, over 1000 ordinary women have been honoured through their families and communities by small engraved plaques on the “Wall of Fame” with corresponding entries in the Book of Lives and Legacies.

The organisation operates a shop next door where the archive and reference library relating to American women’s history is also located.

NWHM is “a nonpartisan, non-profit educational organisation dedicated to restoring the historic contributions and rich, diverse experiences of women to mainstream culture”. Founded by Karen K Staser in 1996 to create a national museum for women’s history, she and others were the driving force behind bringing the Woman Suffrage Statue from the US Capitol Crypt to the US Capitol Rotunda. Its CyberMuseum was launched in 1998, which offers changing online exhibits on women’s history themes. The organisation continues to seek a permanent location for the facility within the Museum mile in Washington DC.

This museum gives recognition to the achievements of women artists of all periods and nationalities by exhibiting, preserving, acquiring, and researching art by women, and by educating the public concerning their accomplishments.

Since its 1987 opening, the museum has sponsored more than 150 major exhibitions including the first US retrospectives of significant international women artists. Work by women artists from the 17C to the present day are displayed on 3 floors while the 4th floor is devoted to the Library and Research Center where exhibitions of women book illustrators are also held. The museum also sponsors many major public programs such as lectures, writers’ workshops, concerts, movies and educational activities for children. In 1997 the museum expanded into the building next door with a new wing for special exhibitions and a shop. There is a popular café situated on the Mezzanine floor overlooking the marbled and chandelier-lit Grand Hall.

The museum was founded by Mrs Wilhelmina Cole Holladay in 1981 who after admiring the work of 17th painter Clara Peeters whilst abroad, realised on her return that there was little recognition or information on women artists. The Holladays’ collection formed the original core of the museum’s collection.
