Established to honour the lives of outstanding women from the state of Alabama, over 60 women have been inducted since 1970. Inductees must be deceased for 2 years and be from or affiliated with Alabama. The Hall of Fame occupies the main floor of the restored A. Howard Bean Hall on Judson Women’s College campus and tells the women’s stories through portraits, photographs, letters and bronze plaques, including for example Helen Keller and Tallulah Bankhead.

Women’s History Museum - on wheels

The brainchild of college librarian Jeanne Schramm, this former 1970s school bus was turned into the world’s first women’s museum on wheels in 1991 by her husband and college physics professor Bob.

This unique private enterprise highlights the lives of over 20 women of the 19C and early 20C who were involved in important social issues such as prison reform, anti-slavery, social work or women’s rights. Two British social reformers, Florence Nightingale and Elizabeth Fry, are featured amongst the American women.

Owned and operated by Jeanne and Bob Schramm, it is based at their home in a small rural town outside Wheeling, and travels up to 350 km away to schools, fairs and other functions.

Jeanne’s interest in women’s history dates from 1979 when a special dollar coin was minted in the US featuring Susan B Anthony. Her research led her to create a dramatic presentation of the life of this key figure in American Women’s Suffrage, dressed in authentic historic costume. Her repertoire eventually amounted to 7 American women social activists, which she performed at local group meetings. Her growing collection of associated books, letters, photographs and other memorabilia developed into the museum.

The displays are designed so that they can be easily removed when the bus goes in for repairs. A wooden plinth in one corner contains “Voices from the Past”, a continuous loop tape of several of the women featured.
