This project aims “to educate and inspire present and future generations about the contributions of women by preserving, sharing and integrating their stories for a more complete understanding of history.”
Currently in a shop front location accessible on 23rd Street, and perched on Golden Hill, it is a 10-minute drive from downtown. The small area contains exhibits, office and shop space as well as the Helen Hawkins Memorial Library and Research Archive containing over 7000 volumes by and about women (some off site). The organisation is also actively building a Children’s and Special Collections (rare, antiquarian) library.
The WHRP develops 2-3 exhibits a year, usually coinciding with Women’s History Month as well as a summer exhibit plus travelling exhibits in the San Diego area. It also has an outreach program including work in schools and the “Write Yourself into Women’s History” essay contest.
Mary B Maschal and a group of other women who realised that women were not included in mainstream history, founded the project in 1983. Beginning with an oral history project and the production of the first issue of their newsletter “In Our Own Voice”, the organisation was originally based at Mary’s house, moving to the Art Union Building in 1996 and to its current suite 3 years later. Their website was launched in 2001.

Currently negotiations are taking place regarding the use of one of the Piers on the waterfront, for this new major museum which will celebrate and examine the role women have played in shaping our world through the centuries. The project began life as the Women’s Heritage Museum, a non-profit corporation founded in 1985 by Jeanne Farr McDonnel, Anne Firth Murray and Jane Van Dusen, with downtown offices in Market Street. For over 10 years it operated as a “museum without walls” producing several exhibits, hosting public programs, sponsoring an annual book fair, providing teacher resources for Women’s History Month, honouring unknown women from local history and recreating historic events. In 1997 Board began developing plans for a major museum in San Francisco and the following year changed its name with newly defined goals and objectives.
It is envisaged that it will not be just a museum but a place where women can gather for social and professional functions to share and exchange ideas in an international forum. It will be equipped with conference rooms, an auditorium and galleries designed to host special events. Women scholars and activists from over 20 different countries and 6 continents have helped develop an exhibit concept document that will continue to evolve. It is scheduled to open in 2004.

Established in 1991, the Women of the West Museum – Her Place in History - aims to “discover, explore and communicate the continuing roles of women in shaping the American West”. The early years were spent planning and fundraising for the construction of a permanent building in Boulder. However since 1998 the organisation changed focus following the launch of its innovative Virtual Museum. It now has a more programmatic agenda offering online exhibits as well as coordinating and developing traveling exhibitions, women’s history trails, lecture series and other educational programs throughout schools, libraries and community groups. A non profit organisation, it is managed by a national Board of Trustees.

A non-profit organisation established in 1985 by a group of women who were concerned by the lack of recognition of women’s achievements in their State. Its mission is “to inspire by celebrating and sharing the lifetime contributions of Colorado’s extraordinary women”. It does not have a permanent building but loans out the exhibit – 65 framed portraits of the inductees with a brief biography - to community organisations and libraries, schools, art galleries etc around the State. There is also an accompanying book “Women of Consequence” which profiles the inductees from 1985-1999 and who played a vital part in the building of Colorado and the West.
