This national specialist museum in Central Jutland collects objects, documents, photographs, slides and biographies to document the lives and heritage of women. Its collection ranges from horseshoes to sanitary towels; from books of conduct to licences to trade; from everyday snapshots to formal portraits; from oral histories of beatings and abortions to slides of paintings by women artists.
There is a permanent display on women’s history from prehistoric times to the present day on the 2nd floor while 3 or 4 temporary exhibitions a year on aspects of women’s history or art are held on the 1st and 3rd floors. There is a shop and popular café on the ground floor.
Centrally located in Cathedral Square in the old part of town, the museum was established in 1982 by a group of women studying at Århus University.
