Housed
in a former 1950s warehouse (3000 m³) in an old
quarter in the citys NW, easily accessible by
car, tram, bus or on foot from the city centre.

Based in an old quarter of the former West German capital, this
museum aims to make womens art and women artists publicly
visible. It is building up two accessible archives of books, catalogues
and documents (eg invitations and newspaper cuttings) on Women
and Art and Women and History. The Arts archive
comprises over 3000 names of contemporary and historic women artists
both in Germany and overseas. It also has a collection of works
by contemporary and historic women artists and documents on womens
history.
The
exhibition program specialises in single or group projects by contemporary
women artists, (including an annual theme project), displayed within
the 3-storey building. A women artists group occupies 8 studios
on the top floor.
Lectures, conferences, discussions, readings, concerts, theatre
and other performances, movies and videos accompany the shows while
an educational program offers guided tours, drawing classes and
childrens courses. There is a café and shop on the
ground floor.
Founded in 1981 by its present director, artist Marianne Pitzen
and the womens group Frauen Formen Ihre Stadt (Women shape
their town), its work is now being continued at a sister institution
in Berlin.

Based
at this ancient Roman spa town in the Rhine valley, near Frankfurt,
this museum is dedicated to the rediscovery and documentation of
womens achievements, and acknowledging the powers of women
as creators of culture. The museum particularly focuses on women
in the history of Wiesbaden; an acknowledgment of female artists;
and basic research concerning women as the carriers of culture.
The museums public displays consist of generally one inhouse
exhibition with changing exhibitions of womens artwork. It
has also established an archive of materials relating to womens
history, collected from existing archives and libraries as well
as an audiotape collection.
Four floors of the building are dedicated to exhibition space with
the top floor used as an office, library and preparation area. Postcards
and exhibition catalogues are available from the small shop in the
reception area on the ground floor. First opened in 1984, the museum
is run by an independent organising body, the Frauenwerkstatt Wiesbaden
Zentrum für Kommunikation und Bildung e.V. (Womens
Workshop Wiesbaden Centre for Communication and Education).
