A non-profit arts organisation with a gallery, it has an archive of women artists and organises exhibitions of contemporary and historical women’s art, particularly specialising in the work of women artists in Berlin of the 1920s and 1930s. It began in 1986 resulting from the collaboration of feminist artist and art historian Gisela Breitling and painter Evelyn Kuwertz on the landmark exhibition Das Verborgene Museum – Dokumentation der Kunst von Frauen (The Hidden Museum – Documentation of the art of women), the first catalogue of women artists in Berlin public collections.
