Based in an old quarter of the former West German capital, this museum aims to make women’s art and women artists publicly visible. It is building up two accessible archives of books, catalogues and documents (eg invitations and newspaper cuttings) on “Women and Art” and “Women and History”. The Arts archive comprises over 3000 names of contemporary and historic women artists both in Germany and overseas. It also has a collection of works by contemporary and historic women artists and documents on women’s history.

The exhibition program specialises in single or group projects by contemporary women artists, (including an annual theme project), displayed within the 3-storey building. A women artists’ group occupies 8 studios on the top floor.

Lectures, conferences, discussions, readings, concerts, theatre and other performances, movies and videos accompany the shows while an educational program offers guided tours, drawing classes and children’s courses. There is a café and shop on the ground floor.

Founded in 1981 by its present director, artist Marianne Pitzen and the women’s group Frauen Formen Ihre Stadt (Women shape their town), its work is now being continued at a sister institution in Berlin.
