JOINT
REGIONAL MUSEUMS PRESERVATION PROJECT 2002/3
During
2002-3 NPWHF Curator and Project Manager Pauline Cockrill, purchased
materials and equipment to assist in the preservation of the valuable
historical collections held by a number of regional museums in
Alice Springs Adelaide House Museum, Old Ghan Museum, Old
Timers Traeger Museum, Central Australian Aviation Museum. The
project was financed by a $2679 (+GST) grant via the NT Regional
Museums Support Program, administered by the Museums
and Art Galleries of the NT
in Darwin. She selected various materials that could be readily
distributed to the museums within the group such as acid free
boxes, tissue paper and plastic film for the appropriate storage
of documents, photographs, newspapers and other paper ephemera
and delicate textiles. Useful equipment to help in the preservation
process was also purchased, including a laminator for preserving
signs, labels and photocopies (not for use on original documents!);
cutting boards and cutters to help in the box and envelope making
process; a labeling machine to create professional and legible
labels and signs on boxes and shelves; a standard tape notetaker
and a standard tape dictating and transcribing machine to assist
in creating and storing oral histories. The materials and equipment
are currently being stored at NPWHFs headquarters but it
is intended that these will be moved to a special room across
the road at The Residency. The other museums within the group
will be able to use this assigned area on a by appointment
only basis. The NPWHF will contact the museums in question
when this facility is set up and ready to go.
