Formally established in March 1996, the museum is part of the Women’s Studies Documentation Unit at a private university in Sudan dedicated to educating women, strengthening women’s roles in national and rural development and achieving equity for women in Sudanese society. It has been developed in cooperation with the National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums, the University of Khartoum and the Museum of National Folklore. It seeks to preserve the cultural aspects of the heritage of Sudanese women and exhibit material culture of women both past and present. It also aims to document the lives and contributions of women within society including the pioneers in the Sudanese Women’s Movement.
