The Historical Center and Hall of Fame first opened in 1987 at the
historic Cooley-Haze House and portrays the lives, achievements
and history of Michigan women through changing exhibits as well
as a permanent display of the members of the Michigan Womens
Hall of Fame. Annual fundraising events are held in the gardens.
It is a project of the Michigan Womens Studies Association
(formed 1973) to improve what is thought and taught about women
in Michigan schools and universities. This organisation also sponsors
an annual conference at a university or college campus to bring
more visibility of womens role in history.
Established in 1978 in the Womens Programs at the Ohio Department
of Job and Family Services, the Hall of Fame provides public recognition
of the many outstanding contributions Ohio women have made to their
state and nation. In 1992 a permanent exhibit was installed at its
current location in downtown Columbus featuring the names and accomplishments
of over 300 inductees. There are also regional displays featuring
local members at 7 other locations around the State. Friends of
the OWHOF provide financial support for these and other educational
programs to increase public awareness of the project. The Department
also sponsors an annual Women Making History Essay contest.
