Opened in 1995, the project was 10 years in the making and recognizes
the great contributions and sacrifices made by Vietnamese women
during the war years. The purpose built 4-floor museum was designed
by female architect Tran Xuan Diem and jointly financed by the Vietnamese
Womens Union and the Ministry of Culture. A giant golden statue
of a woman stands in the lobby, under a domed ceiling representing
a womans breast, introducing the visitor to the role of the
Vietnamese Mother in the community. The museum also includes a history
of the Vietnamese Womens Union and a collection of traditional
womens costume from the 54 minority groups in Vietnam.

This museum is located in a house originally belonging to the Chief
of Police under the former Saigon government. In 1984 it was turned
into the Traditional House of Nam Bo Women and with an additional
4-storey building, opened a year later as the Nam Bo Womens
Museum. The display area is divided into 10 rooms showing the part
women played in national construction and defense. There is also
an auditorium, movie theatre, library and shop within the complex
and is used for educational and cultural activities, meetings and
seminars for women.
